# Configure capture limits and capture file rotation

> Limit capture file size and configure capture file rotation in Airtool 2.

*Airtool 2* offers options to limit the size of the capture files and the number of files generated for a given capture session. You can also configure *Airtool 2* to rotate capture files.

## Configure capture limits

To limit the size of a capture, go to the *Airtool 2* menu bar extra > *Settings* > *General* and select **Limit each capture to**.

You can limit a capture by:

* File size (`kilobytes` or `megabytes`)
* Time (`seconds` or `minutes`)
* Number of frames

  If capture limits are set, you can use ⇧-Click when selecting a capture option from the *Airtool 2* menu to ignore limits for that capture session only.

If you're using capture file limits, you can also configure *Airtool 2* to generate multiple files per capture (the *Airtool 2* menu bar extra > *Settings* > *General* > *Files per capture*).

## Configure capture file rotation

If you have configured *Airtool 2* to generate multiple files per capture, you can also have *Airtool 2* rotate the capture files.

Capture file rotation is useful if you need to run a capture for extended periods and cannot afford to use a lot of disk space to save the captures. For example, you may need to keep capturing traffic until an issue occurs and then have available for analysis, the transmitted frames before or after the event. You can avoid creating large capture files by enabling file rotation with several files and a maximum capture size per file appropriate for the troubleshooting scenario.

To rotate the capture files, go to the *Airtool 2* menu bar extra > *Settings* > *General* and select **Rotate capture files**.
