# General

> General settings in Transfer.

Use General settings to configure active file transfer protocols, error handling, and cleanup options. To change these settings, choose *Transfer* > *Settings*, then click General.

| Option                                     | Description                                                                                                      |
| ------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| File transfer protocol                     | Choose which file transfer protocols to enable, and the port number each one listens on.                         |
| Username, password                         | Enter the username and password that clients must use for authentication, when required by the enabled protocol. |
| When uploading, if the file already exists | Choose how *Transfer* handles overwriting an existing file during an upload request.                             |
| Remove transfer list items                 | Choose when to remove items from the transfer history.                                                           |
| Automatically check for updates            | Choose to automatically check for updates, and how often to check.                                               |
