# Select a root directory

> Choose the root directory Transfer uses to serve and receive files.

The *root directory* is the folder where *Transfer* saves the files after a successful upload request. It is also the folder that contains the files made available to clients for download.

## Select the root directory on first launch

The first time you launch *Transfer*, it sets up a *root directory* automatically. The App Store version prompts you to select the folder you want to use; the non-App Store version doesn't prompt you and instead defaults to `~/Transfer`.

  The *root directory* can be made read-only so that only downloads are allowed. To make the *root directory* read-only, select **Read Only** in the *Transfer* toolbar.

  You can show the contents of the *root directory* in Finder by clicking **Show**.

## Change the root directory from the toolbar

1. In the *Transfer* toolbar, click the path of the current root directory.
2. Choose **Other…**, then select a new directory.

<Tip>
  *Transfer* keeps a history of the last ten previously used directories. To switch to a previous directory, click the current root directory path and choose a directory from the menu.
