# Find networks using other scan sources

> Scan for wireless networks using encapsulated capture feeds or sensors in WiFi Explorer Pro 3.

You can scan for Wi-Fi networks using encapsulated 802.11 capture feeds from access points in "sniffer" or "monitor mode," or sensors, by choosing *listener mode* or *sensor mode*. In *listener mode*, *WiFi Explorer Pro 3* receives capture feeds sent by access points running in "sniffer" or "monitor mode," encapsulated using a protocol such as PEEKREMOTE or TZSP. In *sensor mode*, *WiFi Explorer Pro 3* connects to a remote sensor and receives the scan results for visualization. Depending on its capabilities and configuration, a Linux-based sensor may support active scanning, passive scanning, or both. Android-based sensors support active scanning only. The following sections describe each mode in more detail.

## Scan for networks using encapsulated capture feeds

*Listener mode* allows *WiFi Explorer Pro 3* to listen for encapsulated 802.11 capture feeds from access points that are running in "sniffer" or "monitor mode." Access points must be configured to send these capture feeds to the machine running *WiFi Explorer Pro 3*. They are *encapsulated* because the raw 802.11 frames captured by the access point are sent back to *WiFi Explorer Pro 3* using an *encapsulation protocol*.

### Choose listener scan mode

1. Follow the access point's instructions to start and send the capture feed to the machine running *WiFi Explorer Pro 3*.
2. Click on the *Scan Mode* menu in *WiFi Explorer Pro 3*'s toolbar.
3. Select **Listener** mode.
4. Choose the type of encapsulation protocol and port number that matches the configuration of the access point.

*WiFi Explorer Pro 3* currently supports two encapsulation protocols:

* *PEEKREMOTE*: A prevalent encapsulation protocol designed originally as part of the AiroPeek/OmniPeek protocol analyzer. By default, PEEKREMOTE uses UDP port 5000; however, you can set the listening port to a different value if the access point is configured to send the feed to a different port.
* *TZSP (TaZmen Sniffer Protocol)*: Another standard encapsulation protocol used to encapsulate raw Wi-Fi frames into UDP datagrams sent over wired links. By default, TZSP uses UDP port 37008; however, you can set the listening port to a different value if the vendor sends the feed to a different port.

## Scan for networks using sensors

When using *sensor mode*, *WiFi Explorer Pro 3* connects to a remote sensor and receives its scan results for visualization. Depending on its capabilities and configuration, a Linux-based sensor may support active scanning, passive scanning, or both. Android-based sensors support active scanning only.
